KEEP AMMONIA OUT OF YOUR DRINKING WATER

Pennsylvania American Water Company (PAWC) and other water companies across the US intends to begin putting ammonia in your drinking water to combine with chlorine to make CHLORAMINE

Is not necessary – we are in compliance with current and 2012 USEPA regs.
Creates byproducts that are 100 to 10,000 times MORE toxic than chlorine – scientists across the country (including EPA scientists) are warning against the use of chloramines in light of recent research.
Chloramine is 2,000 times LESS effective in killing e-coli, rotaviruses and polio 1 than chlorine.
Creates byproducts know as hydrazine, N-nitrosamines (NDMA), Di-Halo Acetic Acids and Iodo Acetic Acids. These byproducts are genotoxic (damage DNA), cytotoxic (kills cells much as chemotherapy and radiation do), and mutagenic (cause cancer and birth defects) EPA does not yet regulate these byproducts
Causes massive fish kills in the event of a main break which empties into local streams and creeks.
leaches lead from pipes and fixtures – Dr. Mark Edwards stated that a child would have to ‘eat’ 5 Thomas train cars painted with lead paint to get as much lead as he will get from just one glass of water in Washington D.C. chloraminated system.
Literally ‘eats’ rubber and elastomer fittings in your plumbing causing leaks in your seals and requiring frequent replacement – a peer reviewed study indicates that elastomers with a life expectancy of 5 to 6 years in chlorine has a reduced life of 6 months in chloraminated water.
Adds to the nitrate, phosphorous and zinc load already poisoning the Chesapeake Bay watershed, Susquehanna River Basin and local watersheds.
House filters can reduce monochloramines but NSF claims these certified filters will not take out the highly toxic byproducts – whole house filters run around $6,000 and require annual replacement filters. Point of use filters (on each faucet) run approximately $900+ per faucet. Filters will only protect you within the 4 walls of your home, not at work, school, vacation, restaurants, hotels, family or friends. Home filters are not the answer. If the water company used better filtration our water would be cleaner and not require more toxic chemicals.

	Date: Dear ______________________ I am writing to you to protest the intended use of chloramine in our drinking water system. The foremost scientific experts in water science have published volumes of studies indicating the following: the byproducts of chloramine are 100 times more toxic than those of chlorine, chloramine is less effective in killing e-coli, it has caused massive fish kills as a result of water main breaks, it leaches lead into our children's drinking water, degrades rubber and adds nitrates, phospherous and zinc to already overloaded and suffering watersheds like the Chesapeake Bay, Yellow Breeches, Conodoguinet and Susquehanna River. The water companies claim it is necessary to add chloramine in order to meet EPA standards, but their own data proves otherwise. In two years of challenging this issue, the water companies have failed to produce one study that contradicts the above stated risks to human and environmental health. Yet Pennsylvania state agencies have refused to listen and refused to provide consumers with a meaningful public hearing. The risk to my family and the environment is imminent and I am asking you to intervene and take action to place a moritorium on the further use of chloramine in this state until such time as this issue is brought to a meaningful hearing where health and environmental issues can be fully addressed.
